It’s perfectly reasonable to suggest you won’t see as many hatchbacks on the roads of Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Huntsville as you will in other countries around the world. Americans have traditionally preferred four-door sedans over five-door hatches, but Mazda likes to give shoppers a choice, and the 2023 Mazda3 Hatchback is a stunning-looking small car that deserves more than a second look. The Mazda3 Hatch is a highly stylish small five-door car when you see it, but there’s even more to like as you get to know it better.
The 2023 Mazda3 Hatchback is a compact car with a range of trim levels that’s anything but compact. There are seven different trim levels for shoppers to choose from, and there’s plenty more to configuring your new Mazda3 than choosing a trim level. It stands to reason that the right trim level is an important decision, but you also have to select from a choice of engines, transmissions, and front- or all-wheel-drive.
The lineup starts with the entry-level 2.5 S and goes to the Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, and 2.5 Turbo. The range concludes with the sensational 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus that borders on genuine luxury, and there’s more to consider with the trim levels than which ones you can afford. For example, if you want a Mazda3 Hatchback but want a manual transmission, the top trim levels are out of the reckoning.
It would be a crashing disappointment if a car that looked as sporty and ready-to-go as the 2023 Mazda3 Hatchback delivered lackluster performance. However, there’s nothing to worry about as the little Mazda offers plenty of driver engagement at every level and configurations to suit a broad range of driving styles.
The engine powering the models without Turbo in their name is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit developing 191 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque. That power gets sent to the front or all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission, although the Premium trim level is available with a six-speed manual or the six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.5 Turbo and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus upgrade to a 2.5-liter turbo-four and six-speed automatic transmission, and this unit puts out 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft., or 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. if you fill up with premium gas.
Smaller cars inevitably mean interior space isn’t what it could be if the vehicle were bigger, but the 2023 Mazda3 Hatchback more than makes up for that with an interior that oozes style and quality. The entry-level model’s standard specification is good, but even the most budget-conscious shopper will struggle to avoid the temptation to start with the Select trim to get leatherette-trimmed sport seats, dual-zone climate control, and 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels with a Gray Metallic finish.
There’s a lot to tempt shoppers with the trim level between the entry-level and the top-of-the-range. However, the range-topping 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus is something special that easily justifies its headline status. As well as the turbocharged engine and standard AWD, the top model also features standard blacked-out exterior styling, 12-speaker Bose premium sound system, windshield wiper de-icer, perforated leather-trimmed sport seats, Mazda Navigation, traffic sign recognition, and more.
If any car is going to change American preconceptions of five-door hatchbacks, it will have to be a car as stunningly stylish as the 2023 Mazda3 Hatchback.
