Even if you desperately wanted a stylish Mazda crossover SUV, you were limited to just five seats until recently. But now that we have the recently introduced 2023 Mazda CX-9, it’s possible to transport up to seven people around Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Huntsville in the same comfort and style you’ve been able to with smaller Mazda crossovers for years. But as well as its fabulous stylish interior and exterior styling and seven-seat capability, the CX-9 has another ace up its sleeve as it’s also great to drive.
It’s plain for anyone to see that the exterior styling of Mazda’s crossover SUVs makes them stand out from much of the competition, and the three-row, seven-seat 2023 Mazda CX-9 is no exception. While many three-row SUVs can appear a little elongated with a touch of the minivan about them to accommodate that crucial third row, the CX-9’s designers refused to compromise desirability in pursuit of overt practicality. You can find larger SUVs with more legroom for their third-row passengers, but you won’t find a more stylish model that’s as good to drive as the Mazda for the money.
There are five models in the 2023 Mazda CX-9 lineup to choose from. The lineup starts with the entry-level CX-9 Touring trim that doesn’t look or feel anything like a base model. The next step up in the range is the Touring Plus, and then you have the Carbon Edition, Touring Plus, and range-topping Signature.
Powertrain options for the 2023 Mazda CX-9 couldn’t be much more straightforward than they are, and that’s because all models get the same. No two-wheel drive options are available because every model comes with Mazda’s i-ACTIV AWD with Off-Road Traction Assist, which leaves shoppers to concentrate on choosing the trim that delivers the comfort, safety, connectivity, and driver-assist features they need.
The engine powering every 2023 CX-9 is a very contemporary turbo-four gas engine with different outputs depending on the fuel you use. Your CX-9 can develop as much as 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque with high-octane fuel, or 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. with regular fuel. The power gets sent to all four wheels through a Skyactiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode and a Drive Selection switch. The EPA-estimated fuel economy is 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, and the maximum towing capacity is 3,500 pounds.
Even though third-row legroom is as much of a compromise as it is in all three-row midsize crossover SUVs, there’s a generous amount of room for passengers and cargo inside the 2023 Mazda CX-9. You’ll find 41 inches of legroom up front, 39.4 inches in the second row, and there’s even a usable 29.7 inches of legroom for those in the third-row seats. When the third-row seats are up and in use, you have 14.4 cu.-ft. behind them, and cargo volume grows to an impressive 38.2 cubes with the third-row seats folded away when not used.
Every 2023 CX-9 gets tri-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, a power moonroof, a programmable power liftgate, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The Touring Plus adds heated and ventilated front seats. The Carbon Edition gets a standard heated steering wheel, paddle shifters, heated second-row seats, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, wireless phone charging, and more.
The 2023 Mazda CX-9 is a practical and versatile crossover SUV that brings a new level of style, class, and driver engagement to the three-row midsize segment.
