There’s a lot of demand from families for SUVs with three-row, seven-seat practicality. Still, the 2022 Mazda CX-9 proves that practicality doesn’t mean style and desirability have to be sacrificed to deliver that practicality. The CX-9 not only looks sensational; the interior is well-equipped and inviting, its safety scores are impressive, it’s superb to drive, and the Signature trim makes it a serious rival for luxury SUVs you’ll see driving around Tuscaloosa that would cost you a whole lot more than the Mazda.
There are six different versions of the 2022 Mazda CX-9 to choose from that cover a wide range of specifications and prices to appeal to an even wider audience. The first model in the 2022 lineup is the CX-9 Sport, and from there, the lineup goes through Touring, Touring Plus, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, and finally to the awe-inspiring, top-of-the-line CX-9 Signature. As with the rest of Mazda’s crossover lineup this year, every version of the 2022 CX-9 comes equipped with all-wheel drive as part of the standard equipment.
There aren’t too many non-luxury three-row SUVs that can handle and perform well and are truly engaging for the driver, but those are attributes of the latest 2022 CX-9. This may well be the largest vehicle Mazda has ever offered for sale here in America, but it drives and handles very much like Mazda’s smaller models. Under the hood of the CX-9 is a 2.5-liter turbo-four engine that puts out 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque when run on standard fuel, but that increases to an even more impressive 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. when using premium 93 octane gas.
The power is sent to all four wheels of the CX-9 through a six-speed automatic transmission. Still, despite being relatively tall and with a higher center of gravity, the CX-9 drives and rides more like a car, and the engineers have done a great job to quell the vertical ride motions that are often symptomatic of SUVs.
There’s a distinctly premium feel about the interior of the CX-9, especially when you go above the base model, as even the Touring model comes with standard leather upholstery. However, even the entry-level CX-9 Sport comes with an impressive list of standard equipment for the price that includes LED lights, auto on/off headlights, rain-sensing wipers, rear privacy glass, tri-zone automatic climate control, radar-controlled cruise control, remote keyless entry, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a 10.25-inch color display infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Touring models look like exceptional value as they are not a great deal more expensive than the base model, but they do add that leather upholstery in a choice of light and dark colors and a rear power liftgate with programmable height adjustment.
The 2022 Mazda CX-9 checks just about every single box when it comes to a seven-seat, three-row crossover SUV, especially as it has a distinctively luxury look and feel but without a luxury price to go with it.
