When you see a brand new 2022 Mazda3 Sedan on a lot, in a showroom, or especially driving around the streets of Tuscaloosa, it would be easy to mistake it for something from a luxury brand that would inevitably come with an MSRP to match. The Mazda3 isn’t a luxury model, but this surprisingly affordable compact car has sensational exterior styling, upscale interiors, excellent handling, available all-wheel-drive, and excellent levels of standard equipment and features.
There’s certainly no shortage of choice for consumers when it comes to the available trim levels in the 2022 Mazda3 lineup, as there are currently eight different versions to choose from. The entry-level model is the 2.0 S, and from there, the range progresses through 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, 2.5 Turbo, and finally to the top-of-the-line 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus. Front-wheel-drive is standard for all non-turbo versions of the 2022 Mazda3 Sedan, but AWD is available for Preferred and Premium trim levels, and it’s standard with the 2.5 Turbo and the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.
There are also plenty of choices when it comes to engines, as the 2022 Mazda3 Sedan is available with three different powerplants. The base engine is a 2.0-liter inline-four that produces 155 horsepower and 150 lb.-ft. of torque, but there’s also a 2.5-liter version that increased the output to 186 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque. Models with Turbo in their name inevitably get a turbocharged engine under their hoods, which is a 2.5-liter turbo-four that puts 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque at the little Mazda’s disposal.
Regardless of which model and engine you decide to go for, the Mazda3 Sedan sends its power to the front or all four wheels through a standard six-speed automatic transmission. Front-drive versions of the Mazda3 can deliver up to 28 mpg in the city, 36 mpg on the highway and 31 mpg combined. However, even the most powerful turbo models with standard AWD still get a very reasonable 23 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway and 27 mpg combined.
Automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, active lane control, and adaptive cruise control are standard across the Mazda3 lineup, which probably goes some way to delivering a full five-star rating for overall safety from the NHTSA and coveted Top Safety Pick+ status from the IIHS for this sensational car.
The most affordable Mazda3 S comes with a good level of standard equipment that includes keyless start, an 8-speaker audio system, 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, rain-sensing wipers, air conditioning, full power features, an electronic parking brake, and an 8.8-inch screen for the infotainment system. If you would like the extra connectivity offered by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, every Mazda3 delivers that from the 2.5 S upwards.
The 2022 Mazda3 Sedan will lure you in with its seductive curves, sporty stance and forward-canted grille, but when you start exploring beyond the Mazda’s undeniably stylish exterior, you’ll be even more impressed with what you find.
