The 2023 Mazda CX-50 is an all-new model that takes the brand in a new direction without compromising what already makes Mazda’s vehicles so unique. The CX-50 is a compact crossover SUV that’s perfect for a life confined to the streets and roads of Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Huntsville but equally happy when the pavement runs out and more challenging trails begin. If you love the style, quality, and sophistication of existing Mazda crossovers but you’d like an extra helping of off-road capability, this one’s definitely for you.
One thing that most people will agree about is that Mazda makes cars and SUVs that look sensational. The all-new 2023 Mazda CX-50 continues the company’s tradition of producing stunning-looking vehicles. The CX-50 is sleek, sporty, and sophisticated, but this new nameplate introduces a more rugged element that fits nicely with its enhanced off-road capability. The front and rear are classic Mazda, but new styling cues include vertical air intakes, higher bumpers with faux skid plates, bulging fenders, and squared-off black cladding over the wheels.
Anyone who likes choice will applaud that Mazda has chosen to launch the all-new 2023 CX-50 in nine different trim levels. New nameplates are rarely available in so many variations at the start of their lifespan. The most affordable CX-50 trim level is the 2.5 S, and from there, the range goes to the 2.5 S Select, 2.5 S Preferred, 2.5 S Preferred Plus, 2.5 S Premium, 2.5 Turbo, 2.5 Turbo Premium, and the 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus at the pinnacle of the lineup.
Mazda clarifies its intentions with the 2023 CX-50 by refusing to offer it in any two-wheel formats. The CX-50 is a model that places off-road capability at the heart of its offer. The AWD system that all trim levels get as standard equipment differs from other models due to its more advanced traction control system that handles off-road challenges better. A drive-mode toggle in the console allows the driver to select from four modes of Normal, Sport, Towing, and Off-Road, which employ torque vectoring to shift torque from the rear axle at a stop to the front wheels as speed increases.
The CX-50 may have a more rugged, activity lifestyle aesthetic and job description than other Mazda models, but it still emphasizes safety. All nine models come with standard automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitors, active lane control, and plenty more, so expect excellent safety ratings when the NHTSA and IIHS test the new model.
Even the most affordable 2023 CX-50 gets standard 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, keyless entry, two USB ports, and an 8.8-inch display for an infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, you only have to go up one level to the 2.5 S Select for that display to get upgraded to a more impressive 10.25-inch unit. Half leatherette-trimmed seats also start at this level, and they get heated in the front from the 2.5 S Preferred onwards. Full leather upholstery starts at the 2.5 S Premium grade. Every model above and including the 2.5 S Preferred, also gets a rear power liftgate with programmable height adjustment as part of their standard equipment. The message is clear then; this is a very generously equipped SUV at all levels.
If you’ve admired Mazda SUVs for their styling, poise, quality, and value for a while, but you want or need a degree of good off-road capability, the 2023 Mazda CX-50 could be just what you’re looking for.
